Overview

The fall is a great time in the Sacramento Valley. Surrounded by rivers, lakes, and farmland, it makes a wonderful place for migrating birds. There are a variety of habitats including woodland, marshes, grasslands, and chaparral. Depending on the weather, we’ll do some short hikes and/or car trips through some of the numerous wildlife areas and farm roads. Some of the birds you might discover are the yellow billed magpie, red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, American kestrel, snow goose, tundra swan, northern harrier, western meadowlark, large flocks of black birds, great and snowy egrets, bald eagle, horned larks, great blue heron, white-faced Ibis, sandhill crane, savannah and white-crowned sparrow, short-eared owl, and many types of swallows, to name a few! Home Hospitality

Home Hospitality provided by the Friendship Force club of Sacramento.

Live With a Local

  • One or two ambassadors will be hosted in each home in the greater Sacramento area.
  • We'll be concentrating on birding and the natural environment, but will also share some of the local history and politics (Sacramento is the state capital).
  • You'll have at least one free day to explore the local area which includes gold rush history, great museums, wine tasting (or breweries), and more.

Sightseeing Highlights

  • State Capitol
  • Old Town Sacramento
  • Local wineries
  • Wildlife preserves
  • American River
  • Local birding sites
As a stopover, we stayed at Sacramento for three nights. The program they prepared was superb...We stayed only short time at Sacramento, but everyone thought we should have planned to have one whole week stay at the club. Wonderful! - Previous ambassador from Japan

Know before you go

  • Journey number 14272.
  • The weather could be cold and rainy, or beautiful in October. Ambassadors should prepare for the rain just in case.
  • We'll have some days of hiking on uneven surfaces to see various birds, but mostly it will be in automobiles and hard-packed trails.
  • Ambassadors should plan to fly into Sacramento Airport or drive to Sacramento. Anyone flying into San Francisco will need to pay for their own transportation to Sacramento (we can help organize it).
  • If you have a spouse or significant other that will be joining you, please let them know they may be “on their own” if they prefer not to join us for the outings.
