About the club
The Western Tokyo club branched from Tokyo club in January 1989. For the first 13 years, we participated in hosting only. We had our first outbound Journey to FF Murray Bridge, Australia in October 2002. Since then, we have hosted and gone on Journeys usually once in a year. We welcome ambassadors from any country. Our hosting capacity is 15-20 ambassadors depending on the timing. The best time for visit is from March to June and October to November. Most members are retired, but some still have full-time or part-time jobs. We have annual meetings, board meetings and monthly club meetings except in summer to make plans and organize FF journeys and intra-club activities such as day trips, celebration meeting for the World Friendship Day, etc.
About the region
Our club is located in Machida (population: about 430,000) and surrounding cities, typical bed-town for metropolitan Tokyo. The closest airport is Narita International Airport (cost for transportation: about 3600 yen) and Tokyo (Haneda) International Airport (cost for transportation: about 1400 yen).
About the Journey
A typical program includes welcome party (or farewell party), a visit to central Tokyo (imperial palace, Marunouchi, Ginza, Tsukiji, Asakusa, Sumida river, Tokyo metropolitan government, etc.), historical Kamakura (Great Buddha, Hase temple, Tsurugaokahachimangu – the shinto shrine), port town Yokohama, and Yakushi-ike park or other sightseeing spots. Cultural experiences will be provided as well, such as Kimono dressing and calligraphy, a visit to a historical museum such as the Edo-Tokyo museum. A day trip or overnight trip to Fuji-Hakone National Park (surrounding Mt. Fuji area) is also organized as an optional activity.
