About the club
Friendship Force of Central North Carolina (FFCNC) was formed in 2006 when a group from Citizens for International Understanding (CIU), who also promoted homestay cultural exchanges, merged with Friendship Force of Winston-Salem. Our members live primarily in Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem.
FFCNC has hosted ambassadors from numerous international countries including Japan, Turkey, England, Australia, Germany, Peru, as well as domestically from Pennsylvania, Florida, and Colorado. We also participate with Open World and have hosted from Russia, Moldova, the Republic of Georgia, Ukraine, and Kosovo. Our chapter has sent ambassadors recently to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Russia, and Colorado.
About the region
Encompassing three cities – Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem – the “Piedmont Triad” of North Carolina is centrally located halfway between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Carolina beaches. Washington, DC is 300 miles to the north and Atlanta is 300 miles to the south. Once known as an industrial area – Greensboro for textiles, Winston-Salem for tobacco, and High Point for furniture – Central North Carolina today boasts a healthy variety of enterprises and remains a transportation hub for the state. Temperatures are moderate in spring and fall although air conditioning is a summer necessity.
About the Journey
FFCNC tries to tailor each Journey to suit the visiting group of ambassadors. Opportunities abound here – as well as a charming slower pace of living. A history buff? The Moravian settlement of Old Salem beckons as well as the Revolutionary War sites of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Is the outdoors your thing? Enjoy miles and miles of hiking trails, numerous city parks and gardens and the renowned North Carolina Zoo. Or explore the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, Hanging Rock State Park or Pilot Mountain.
Are you a sports fan? This is golf heaven – plus the pro tour stops here in late summer. There’s college basketball in winter and minor league baseball in the spring/summer. And NASCAR was born here. Shopping? Of course! Including Replacements, LTD., the world’s largest supplier of old and new china, crystal, flatware and collectibles. Wineries? North Carolina has a burgeoning number of acclaimed vineyards – like nearby Childress, Westbend, and Rafaldini – complete with tours and tasting rooms. Love crafts? Visiting nearby Seagrove Potteries shows what our red clay soil is actually good for. Come and enjoy the southern hospitality in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina!
