Andrew Stirling - FFI Board Member - Ottawa, Canada

Andrew Stirling joined the Friendship Force of Ottawa club in 2001. Since then he and his wife, Eileen, have participated or led 15 Out-bound exchanges and a number of In-bounds. He is a past president of the Ottawa club and worked to build its membership to more than 180 members.

Andrew was born and educated in Adelaide, Australia.  After completing a PhD in physics, he worked as a scientist and manager at Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd. Andrew represented Canada at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna leading an international team which developed methods for assuring that nuclear materials are not diverted for weapons.  Later, he managed a team that developed methods for sterilizing medical devices with radiation produced from high-energy electron beams rather than nuclear materials. This won a U.S. research and development award for innovative technology. During his professional career, Andrew traveled to Japan on 12 occasions and multiple times to countries throughout Europe, Asia and the South Pacific.

He speaks English and French and has traveled to most developed countries for business or with Friendship Force.  

In his spare time, Andrew is a member of the organizing committee of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference and president of the condo association in which he lives. He swims every morning to fill in the few remaining moments.

Andrew is married to Eileen Howell: a retired management consultant.
